Abstract:

This handbook includes A-Z entries profiling intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations that are actively engaged in the human rights and humanitarian fields.  Definitions of basic human rights concepts are also provided.  Key individuals and their contributions are included along with descriptions of the most important treaties and instruments. The volume begins with a list of acronyms used in the entries, then presents a chronology of relevant events and developments from1824 to 2006.  This is followed by an introduction which traces the origins of the human rights concept, the evolution of human rights and humanitarian organizations, the development of international human rights law, and the promotion of human rights.  Four appendices reproduce human rights instruments.  An extensive bibliography (see separate entry) concludes the volume.
