Abstract:
This chapter discusses the relevance of the concept of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for refugee groups. It begins with a detailed description of the diagnostic criteria for PTSD. The authors then review the debates surrounding the applicability of PTSD to the refugee experience. They continue with a discussion of the challenges involved with cross-cultural diagnosis and treatment of refugees with mental health needs. They end with a summary of three critiques of PTSD, concluding that "the PTSD model offers a useful conceptual and therapeutic approach to the psychological impact of trauma on refugees from all ethnocultural backgrounds" (p. 221).
