Abstract:

Survey and synthesis of German- and English-language publications that focus on the role of education during conflict and post-conflict periods.  The first two chapters provide an introduction and context for addressing the challenge of providing education during emergencies.  The author's analysis of the literature is organized around the subsequent chapters, which discuss "Education in times of emergency, crisis and war"; "The two faces of education: education and the roots of peace and violence"; "Education for peace: concepts for peace education and their relevance for development cooperation"; and "Measuring peace: instruments for conflict impact assessment in education assistance."  The author does not describe his search methodology.  Over 200 references are listed.
