Kagawa, Fumiyo. 2005. "Emergency Education: A Critical Review of the Field." Comparative Education 41 (4):487-503.

Abstract:

This review focuses on the provision of education in emergency situations.  Its aim is to "contribute to the academic discussion of emergency education" (p. 487), whose literature to date has been dominated by unpublished agency reports.  The author begins by discussing the various approaches over time that have been taken vis-à-vis education and armed conflict.  She continues with definitions of emergencies and emergency education, the rationale for providing education in emergencies, and the content of what should be learned and taught.  She also considers the debate surrounding emergency education interventions as short-term relief or long-term development.  Approximately 50 references are listed.
