Abstract:
Commissioned by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), this review investigates the "causes and nature of the [Mozambican] displacement experience and peoples' own survival strategies, as well as research on the nature and impact of assistance programmes" (p. 1). The author begins with an overview of what early studies focused on in terms of causes of flight and the nature of Mozamibican displacement. Subsequent sections focus on livelihoods and the experiences of the displaced; the impact of forced migration on host areas; returning home and re-building Mozambique; and assistance programmes. The report ends with recommendations for future research. Approximately 170 references. Note: The print version of this review includes a bibliographic listing of titles from the Refugee Studies Centre library catalogue that relate to Mozambique and to Mozambicans in neighboring countries. A Portuguese version of the report is also carried by the RSC library.
