Abstract:

Review of recent literature that focuses on internally displaced Sudanese, Sudanese refugees who fled to other countries, and former Sudanese refugees and IDPs who returned to their communities.  The review discusses causes of displacements, the nature and characteristics of refugee and IDP movements, the experiences of refugees and IDPs after their displacement, the effectiveness of humanitarian assistance, the impact on host communities, and resettlement,  repatriation and integration issues.  It also identifies areas that could benefit from further research.  The author provides a very thorough characterization of the available literature.  The bibliography includes over 300 references to English-language materials, most of which are available either through the Refugee Studies Centre library in Oxford (http://www.rsc.ox.ac.uk) and/or the Nordic Africa Institute library in Uppsala (http://www.nai.uu.se).
