Abstract:

This report reviews literature relating to the influx of two different refugee groups into South Africa: Mozambican refugees in the 1980s and refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) from the early 1990s to the present.  The former are well-documented in the literature, while the latter are not.  The author compares and contrasts the demographics of the two groups, the legal framework in place at the time of their arrival, and their reception by the South African population.  Over 40 references are listed.
