Abstract:
Until recently, urban refugees have not been the subject of many academic studies. This paper set out to define what constitutes an urban refugee, and to review the existing literature both on urban refugees generally as well as those in Kenya specifically. The authors discuss the demographic characteristics of urban refugees, the causes of refugee influxes into urban areas, the impact of urban refugees on development, and policies relating to urban refugees. Next, they provide a profile of urban refugees in Kenya, including Somalis, Sudanese, Ethiopians, and Ugandans. The authors conclude with a detailed list of themes that emerged from the literature and that present opportunities for future research. Over 100 references are included.
