Abstract:

A research review undertaken as stage one of UNICEF's larger "Capacity Building Project for Children Affected by Armed Conflict."  The aim of this initial stage of work was to locate relevant information on war-affected and displaced children in South Asia and to identify the relevant assistance organizations.  The information elicited will be used to lay the foundation for subsequent field research undertaken in stage two of the project.  This report synthesizes eight separate reviews that examined literature on the situation of children in Afghanistan, Bangladesh (both Cox’s Bazaar and the Chittagong Hill Tracts), Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, respectively.  Chapters cover the nature of armed conflict in South Asia, factors that contribute to conflict in the region, the impact of conflict on children, and psychosocial aspects.  The conclusion highlights gaps and provides recommendations for future research.  A literature search methodology is not provided.  Over 300 references are listed.
