Abstract:
The aim of this review is to "assess the literature regarding the prevalence and predictors of PTSD following civilian war trauma and torture" (p. 37). The authors first describe the methodology they used to identify the 48 studies used in their review. They continue with a summary of PTSD prevalence, broken down by type of population or sample, i.e., tortured refugee or displaced populations, tortured community samples, refugee and displaced populations affected by war trauma, and community samples affected by war trauma. They next examine risk factors for developing PTSD, protective factors, the maintenance of PTSD over time, and the cross-cultural applicability of PTSD. They conclude with recommendations for further research. Approximately 70 references were included.
