Haque, C. Emdad. 1995. "The Dilemma of ‘Nationhood’ and Religion: A Survey and Critique of Studies on Population Displacement Resulting from the Partition of the Indian Subcontinent." Journal of Refugee Studies 8 (2):185-209.

Abstract:

This paper reviews studies that focus on the population displacement caused by the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent.  The author begins by summarizing the partition plan and providing maps of the distribution of Muslims and Hindus.  The subsequent discussion is organized under the following themes: explanations of the partition and causes of the refugee problem; demographics of the exodus; refugee experiences; and rehabilitation, assimilation and integration.  The author reviews the various research methods employed by the relevant studies and suggests directions for future research.  Approximately 50 references are listed.
