Abstract:
The aim of this encyclopedia is to "leave the reader with a real sense of how different cultures deal with the varying and similar challenges of the diasporic experience, and what anthropology has contributed to understanding that experience" (p. xiii). Some 120 scholars, predominantly anthropologists, contributed essays that provide overviews of diasporas, discuss specific topics pertaining to diasporas, and profile specific diasporic communities. The essays are divided into three sections accordingly, with the cultural profiles taking up the second volume. The overviews describe populations that have experienced either voluntary or forced migration. The specific topics cover the arts, politics, cities, and types of diasporas. The profiles adhere to a more standard format and include the location, history, demography, language, culture and community, cultural variation, relationship to the host country/homeland, and identity of the diasporic communities. A glossary is included in volume 1, while a detailed index is provided in volume 2.
