Abstract:

This review assesses research undertaken on the environmental impact of refugee settlements around the world.  It looks particularly at three environmental issues that may be influenced by the presence of refugees: deforestation, land degradation, and water supply and quality.  The author finds that the research does not support the view that forced migration leads to greater environmental degradation.  He concludes that future research should investigate the complex interactions between environmental change and wider social, economic and political factors.  Approximately 45 references are listed.
