Abstract:

In this review, the author seeks to better understand the interaction between forced population movements and the transmission of disease.  The discussion is organized around certain forced migration groups in different parts of Africa: political refugees in Northeast Africa; forced resettlement in Northeast Africa; pastoralists and drought in West Africa.  The author concludes with a comparison of the health hazards experienced across the different population groups and an assessment of the measures that have been taken to address the health problems of forcibly displaced persons.  Sixty-two references are listed.
