Abstract:
This book was prepared by a professor of psychology to assist both expatriate and national/local staff involved in humanitarian work around the world. While types of workers have different issues and needs, they are also "confronted with similar challenges in terms of work conditions, the people they are working with and for, and the challenges of returning home after an assignment is done" (p. viii). The book's chapters follow the stages of an assignment, and include "Preparing for a field assignment"; "Safety and security in the field"; "Taking care of yourself: preventing health problems in the field"; "Managing stress"; "Working with survivors of traumatic experiences"; and "Going home - a journey of discovery." The annexes provide useful information in the form of a "before you go" checklist, a First Aid manual, guidelines for managing stress, and relaxation exercises.
