Abstract:
In order to improve the knowledge base on human trafficking, the author set out not only to summarize the research that has been conducted on this issue, but also to "organize the material into key themes, critically assess the knowledge base, and identify gaps and future challenges" (p. 9). The focus of the review is on sex trafficking. The discussion is organized as follows: the challenges of research on trafficking; definitions and language use; current baseline data; the causes of trafficking; flows, routes and recruitment; the realities and consequences of sexual exploitation; traffickers and exploiters; prevention and awareness raising; assessment of national and international trafficking strategies; and gaps in available knowledge. Over 60 references are listed.
