New York: Fordham University Press; Center for International Health and Cooperation. [Also reproduced as chapter 21 in Concepts and Practice of Humanitarian Medicine (Springer 2008, 143-50), under the title "The Language of International Humanitarian Action: A Brief Terminology."]

Abstract:

In the interest of promoting greater communication among the many players involved in disaster situations, the author defines a number of disaster-related terms outside of the medical field that will likely be encountered by personnel working in the field.  These are taken from the author's more extensive Multilingual Dictionary of Disaster Medicine and International Relief (see separate entry).  Despite the duplication, this chapter is useful for its succinct presentation of core vocabulary and standard concepts employed in the provision of disaster and humanitarian assistance.
