Abstract:

This study was conducted to assess the pros and cons of using World Health Organization (WHO)/National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) reference values to evaluate the nutritional status of refugee children.  The authors compiled a dataset from a search of the medical and health literature that focused on malnutrition.  They determined that WHO/NCHS references are not sufficiently representative of refugee populations and they recommend establishing more standard values to ensure better assessment of malnutrition in the field.  Over 25 references are included.
