Ager, Alastair. 1993. Mental Health Issues in Refugee Populations: A Review. Boston: Harvard Medical School, Department of Social Medicine, Project on International Mental and Behavioural Health.
Abstract:
This review begins with a summary of psychosocial studies conducted after the second World War and the Vietnam war. The author continues with a consideration of the most common psychosocial stressors that occur within the context of the different phases of the refugee experience: pre-flight, flight, reception and durable solution. Next, he reviews the various factors that help to mitigate the potentially negative impact of these stressors on the mental health of refugees. Finally, the author outlines the implications that the preceding discussion has for developing appropriate mental health policies and programmes. He concludes with a call for more empirical research in this area of study as well as greater integration with related fields of study such as developmental psychopathology and psychological anthropology. He also highlights specific issues of concern that would benefit from further research. A search methodology is not provided. Approximately 135 references are listed.
