Crowley, Caitlin. 2009.  "The Mental Health Needs of Refugee Children: A Review of Literature and Implications for Nurse Practitioners."  Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners 21 (6):322-31.

Abstract:

The author reviewed literature on the mental health needs of refugee children.  The review covered research published in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Netherlands, and Canada.  The discussion begins by looking at the refugee experience, then moves to mental health screening tools, mental health interventions, and recommendations for clinicians that work with refugee children and families.  The author concludes that while many refugee children resettled in the United States will experience mental health issues, others will not because of strong coping mechanisms.  Mental health screenings are important to identify those most at risk.  Over 50 studies were reviewed.
