Abstract:

Review of literature conducted to assess the status of psychological therapies used to treat adult refugees and asylum seekers who have experienced trauma and require intervention as a result.  The study begins with a review of the mental health issues confronting refugees and an analysis of the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) concept and its validity for non-Western population groups.  Only 10 relevant reports were retrieved.  A description of search methods is not provided, although the databases used are listed.  After reviewing the literature located, the authors conclude that research is limited, but despite this, some treatments appear potentially effective, particularly those that are culturally based.  Forty-five references are listed.
