Abstract:

The authors prepared this handbook in order to help "increase understanding of refugee and immigrant health specifically, and cross-cultural health generally" (p. xi). Their aim is to promote the development of cultural competence. To that end, Part one of the book provides a general overview of refugees, immigrants and health issues, while Part two looks at specific populations and their cultural traditions and backgrounds. Chapters cover Afghanistan, Bosnia, Burma, Cambodia, Caribbean, Central America, China, Cuba, Egypt, Ethiopia/Eritrea, Guatemala, Haiti, India (Asian), Iran, Iraq, Japan, Korea, Kosovo (Albania), Kurds (from Iraq), Laos, Liberia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Roma, Russia, Somalia, Sudan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is reproduced in the annex.
