Abstract:

This paper synthesizes research relating to livelihoods and how refugees achieve greater self-reliance.  The author introduces key terms and their definitions, then provides an historical review of refugee assistance and its relationship with refugee livelihoods.  Subsequent chapters discuss linkages between livelihoods and human rights, refugee livelihood strategies, the living conditions of local populations, livelihoods and the refugee life cycle, and successful livelihood interventions.  The author concludes with recommendations for UNHCR policy.
