Abstract:

This chapter summarizes the scholarly literature on refugee mental health.  It begins with an overview of forced migration around the world and U.S. policy towards refugees and asylum-seekers.  It continues with a review that covers the prevalence of mental illnesses in refugees, coping mechanisms, cultural issues, and assessment and treatment issues.  It ends with a discussion of challenges and opportunities, and provides recommendations for research.  Approximately 100 references are included.
