Abstract:

The authors undertook this review to better understand more recent refugee trends in Europe and their consequences.  The review focuses on academic studies of refugees and asylum seekers in four countriesFrance, Germany, Spain and Italyand published since 1989.  The authors provide background on the current refugee situation in Europe, examine theoretical approaches used in various studies, consider the refugee definitions employed, discuss asylum policies, and look at the settlement and integration of refugees.  In their conclusion, they call for more comparative research and highlight several areas that could benefit from further investigation.  Over 100 references are listed.
