Hein, J. 1993. "Refugees, Immigrants, and the State." Annual Review of Sociology 19 (1):43-59.

Abstract:

The objective of this review is to shed light on the refugee's relationship with the state in order to better distinguish between the categories of "refugee" and "immigrant."  To this end, the author examines the different phases of the refugee experience (causes of flight, refugee movements, and adaption in the host country), using the nominalist versus realist perspectives to frame his discussion.  Over 130 references are listed.
