Abstract:
Remittances play an important role in helping conflict-affected individuals and communities transition from war to peace and taking the place of international relief when it is withdrawn. Yet remittances as an important source of income have been minimally studied. This review hopes to fill this gap. The first section looks at research relating to migrant remittances generally, diaspora communities and remittances in conflict situations, the role of remittances in peacebuilding, and migrant funding of conflict. The second section discusses obstacles to and facilitation of remittances to countries in conflict. The third section focuses on three country examples: Afghanistan, Somalia and Sri Lanka. The authors conclude with recommendations for future research. Approximately 90 references are listed.
