Abstract:

This review examines research into the reactions of young refugees to stressful situations that occur throughout the life cycle of the refugee experience: preflight, flight, and resettlement.  Relevant journal articles published between 1990 and 2003 were retrieved from three databases.  The authors found that while children and adolescents do experience stress as a result of their exposure to conflict, these reactions are often mitigated by coping strategies, resilience, and certain cultural factors.  The authors call for more research in these areas.  Over 150 references are listed.
