Abstract:

The author of this review points to the limited discussion in the research literature about the situation of refugee women, despite the fact that more women are refugees than men.  To redress this, she frames her discussion around three phases of the refugee woman's experience: flight, refugee camp stays, and resettlement (in North America).  The last phase has been analyzed the most.  As such, the section on resettlement is subdivided as follows: economic adjustment; women, aging and adjustment; the family's role in the adjustment process; gender asymmetry; and gender and ethnic identity.  In addition, much of the literature published in the 1970s and 1980s focused on Southeast Asian refugees, and this emphasis is reflected in the present article.  The author ends with recommendations for further research.  Over 100 references are listed.
